In 2017 a group of leading youth track coaches and managers from across the United States convened a summit in Kansas to discuss the creation of an international championship for age group athletes. The vision blossomed into the International Youth Track Championships (IYC), and a year later the inaugural meet was held on the campus of Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.
In 2019 the competition moved to its permanent venue in the Washington D.C. suburb of Landover, Maryland. After a two year hiatus forced by the global Covid-19 pandemic, the IYC returned in 2022 to continue its journey to become the destination championship event for youth track and field. The 2025 edition of the International Youth Track Championships was an overwhelming success, with numerous meet records falling, athletes from track rich Jamaica appearing for the first time, and the Ralph Durant Academy defending its team championship ahead of MTA Ontario from Canada.

The 2026 International Youth Track Championships will again feature some of the brightest future stars in the sport of track and field. With over 4000 athletes expected to participate, the IYC will offer a global challenge of running, jumping and throwing for tomorrow’s Olympic and world champions. Meet, national and international records will surely fall as domestic and foreign competitors achieve the thrill of victory, show their state and national flags, and contend for the coveted team championship. Equally as exciting as the action on the track is seeing the sights in our nation’s capital city. The International Youth Track Championships is a unique event, in a spectacular city, that will produce memorable experiences for all athletes and their families.
